Special Memory

When my sister, brother and I were growing up we always went to our Gramma Reid's house for breakfast on Saturday mornings. I remember it was a very special time for us and if I could do that just one more time I would be so blessed. Grandpa and Gramma's house was always warm and inviting. I loved going over there. I would sometimes ride bare back with my dad. We lived about a half a mile from their house. We would walk lots of times through the woods to their house. Anyway, one of the breakfasts she would serve us was sourdough pancakes. I can taste them now. This summer my dear friend Mary was able to go on an Alaskan cruise up the inlet to Juneau where I was raised. I was so excited for her, but oh how I wanted to
be smaller, so she could stuff me in her suit case. She asked me if there was anything I would like from Alaska. The one thing I have missed is a sourdough starter mix. She did just that! 2 packages. How fun is that? I have been waiting all summer long for today. You will need to have it in a warm place. Between 70-80 degrees to have the starter get started. This
starter jar is just like my Gramma's. You also can use a wide mouth mason jar. Just so easy, promise, try it.

I picked up this Bread Book this last year and can't wait to try some of the recipes. It is so beautiful inside. There are so many wonderful breads and starters. It is worth the spend!
I am giving some web sites for you to look up, if you want to start your own starter buy scratch. It is sooo easy. You just need to feed your starter every week or so. We bake so much more bread in the winter months. It has been a while since I have had an Alaskan Sourdough starter going; I will really enjoy this day. Will take me back to memories with Grandma Reid. I would love to hear from you, if you start a starter or have one going. I will be trying out some other starters later on. I will keep you posted.

If you would like to order Alaska Jack's starter call. 1 888 660 2257. That is all they have on their web site. Just the phone number.

Sourdough Pancakes Recipe
1 cup of starter
2 cups lukewarm water
2 1/2 unbleached flour
2 large eggs
2 large eggs, beaten well
1/3 cup half and half
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 teaspoon soda
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Let mixture bubble about 10 minutes. Pour about a 1/4 cup of batter onto a hot griddle. Butter and pour maple syrup over the top..... It is so nummy!

My sister reads my blog so here is a note for her.

Hi Shanny,
Doesn't this recipe take you back to some very special memories? Wish we could be sitting in Gramma's dressing room (that Grandpa had specially built for her) and putting on make up, dressing up with her clothes, jewelry and painting our nails. Now that would be a very special day wouldn't you say?

If any of you ladies have memories or breakfast memories with your Gramma. Please share with us. I just love reading special stories!

Blessings,
Linda

Sweet Blogger Friend!

Hello,
You just have to go over to Rebecca of Sunny Morning Farm. The first part of October she started fixing up her "Chicken Coop" and did she ever do an adorable makeover. It is absolutely the cutest thing!!! Her honey made the neatest nest boxes for her hens. You will not believe how clever it is. All the pictures that she took will bless you. She sure made some hens happy! I am thinking she is one talented lady. You must go and see her blog. I just love old buildings and her coop is so fun. Enjoy your time at her place!

We are in the middle of soy bean harvest. Please pray for the safety of our family. Lots of big machinery and with little ones around you are always having to be on your guard. Thank you so much and hope your day is full of blessings.

Blessings,
Linda

1 Timothy 6:6

"But godliness with contentment is great gain.

For we brought nothing into this world,

and we can take nothing out of it.

But if we have food and clothing, we will be

content with that.

mmm....... just meditating on this today. To live in simplicity,

does that make us content?

Blessings to you today,
Linda

The Girls Are Back.....In Full Force!

Oh, my girls are back laying eggs. They went on strike and it was very sad for me. I soo much enjoy having fresh eggs for my daily cooking. I enjoyed going out with my basket, that my friend Gail gave me with an adorable ribbon tied around the handle gathering eggs and it just wasn't happenin! They are in full force now. The old hen started laying and the young girls just followed her leading. You know the best thing about chickens? That they always lay eggs on Sunday! That is just a blessing in my book. The Lord is just so good to us, even in the little things!

Remember I showed you the picture of the duck egg nest? Well I kept forgetting to tell you that something came and ate every single egg. Sad day on the farm for me and just not nice that something would come and eat them allll. She is still laying and they are the best eggs for baking cakes and muffins. I am not sure why they are the best. Someone just told me.

In my last post I shared with you about the Girlhood Home Companion magazine. I hope you took advantage of the free download for the beautiful tea cozy newsletter. If any of you had problems, please get ahold of me, so Jill and I can make sure you received the blessings we wanted you to receive. If you were blessed by it, please let us know why. If you have ideas that you would like to see in the magazine let me know and I will pass it on. I know Jill's heart is to bless ladies of all ages with the Girlhood Home Companion magazine.

Well I am off to church to see what the Lord has for me this day and hopefully I will put it in my life and live it. That is the hardest thing about the Christian walk, wouldn't you agree?
Blessings,
Linda

We Are In The Girlhood Home Companion, With A Special Gift For You!

We are in The Girlhood Home Companion featuring our
Farmer's Market this summer.

I met Jill and her family almost a year ago. It was during a time, when our family was really crying out to the Lord for direction. I ended up sending Jill a note of thanks and from then on the rest is history. "His story" of how He can take two families miles apart and make something very beautiful. Their family has become very dear friends of ours over this past year. We started writing and doing special craft items for The Girlhood, which has been such a delight. Like a whole new adventure for my girls and myself. Our daughters have also written some articles for their delightful magazine. If you
flip through their magazine, you will see why we have enjoyed it so much.

Click here for The Girlhood Home Companion Magazine the magazine for
Grandmother's, Momma', Daughter's and Granddaughters.

I so want you to meet my dear friend Jill Novak, publisher of The Girlhood Home Companion Magazine. Jill and her husband Robert have been married 30 years and are the parents of five precious children ranging in ages from 23 to 10. The Novaks live on a 200-acre farm in Northern Illinois where they enjoy country living to the fullest. A weathered sign nailed to the old implement shed on their property reads "Pebbly Brook Farm - Eggs" and it is from this peaceful setting that many of the images and illustrations that grace the pages of The Girlhood Home Companion originate. Jill is an author and avid nature journalist. She passionately records life's everyday moments while tending her garden or taking a jaunt through the forest or fields. Besides keeping numerous chickens and geese, the Novak family have two Nubian goats, a Jersey calf, four cats and a dog named Vesper. Psalm 84:5-7 is one of Jill's favorite Bible passages and one that she feels describes her life at Pebbly Brook Farm.

"How blessed is the man whose strength is in You,

In whose heart are the highways to Zion!

Passing through the valley of weeping they make it a spring;

The early rain also covers it with blessings.

They go from strength to strength,

Every one of them appears before God in Zion."

Remembrance Press has two Girlhood Home Companion Clubs.

Jill invites you to come and be refreshed through the ministry of Remembrance Press. Enjoy a free sample of the The Girlhood Home Companion Tea Cozy Club featuring Prairie Flower Farm and my family. They have wonderful books and tapes of encouragement. You will enjoy your stay so much! So please go and sign up for the free sample. We would appreciated it, if you share this with your family and friends.

We Were So Blessed Yesterday Putting Up Corn!

I will finish my post at the end here, wanted you to see the pictures first of our blessed day yesterday. This will explain step by step how we put it up. It was such a fun day! I was so tired when I got home I crashed!!!!

This is Grandma Yoder. I took this picture years ago, but it is my favorite one of her. She usually has on her white Amish apron. She is just adorable!!!!!

Check this out! This had a propane tank hooked up to the bottom, the top part was filled with water and it got to a real hot boil. We put the timer on for 4 minutes after we put the corn into cook. Then the corn was taken out and put in another galvanized stand with cold water. (somehow I didn't get a picture of the second stand separately).

This was the third cooling tub for the corn to get real cold . I love this old wash stand!!! I like how she had everything set up by the flowers. Cute cute!!!!

It was a bit cold when we got to their farm, but later in the day it warmed up. There was a lot of shucking going on. 12 bags of corn in seed bags. It truly was the most beautiful corn. We didn't plant it until the 8th of July. This year was perfect for a fall crop. I guess it doesn't always work that way. WE were truly thankful to the Lord for the beautiful crop.

We would have beautiful egg baskets of fresh corn ready for Rosa to lower into the "hot pot".

I think Rosa looks kind of like Tasha Tudor. Don't you? She would take the basket and lower it in the boiling water for 4 minutes.
Here is the other galvanized tub also on legs. This was cold water also. We would keep it in here for about 10 minutes and then put it in the real cold water for another 10 minutes.

This was the last process for cooling of the corn. It looked so pretty. Thought the wash stands worked so well. We have a unit in our barn that has two sinks that was used in cleaning the milk equipment when Mr. Phil's family had a dairy. We want to get that working for next year, so we can teach our family how to do this. I can't wait...... Winter project #130............and counting. Smile

Precious little face. I caught her just standing eyeing the corn. We all want to eat some so bad! WE did eat some corn at lunch time with a nice warm bowl of homemade soup!

Marion, in the background had cancer and is going through treatment. You could pray for her recovery! She is so dear to me. She is doing well, but has weak days. Makes my heart hurt! They worked away shucking the corn together. This little girl is so rich to be able to learn along side her family. They are never to young to learn.

Look at these precious barefeet. She worked so hard. I was amazed that she stayed through the whole process. It is what she has learned under all the ladies in her life that work so hard to put their produce up for the winter months.
Rosa laid out a towel and put the cooked corn on top. We used sharp knives to cut off the corn.

The corn was cut and placed into large galvanized pans. I then would scoop up the corn and put it in freezer bags. We got 100, bags full, with 5 cups in each bag. The over wheming job that I thought it would be, with many hands became a blessing. Aren't you so grateful to have those women in your life, that you can work along side? I guess the one thing I am so grateful for is the ladies that help me, as I train my daughters to be keepers at home.

At the end of the day is dish washing! The little ones are always right in the middle of the work! Learning right along side the ladies. I love it!

Wanted to write a little at the end here. I posted yesterday that our family has not been feeling well. We are on the mend! Went to the doctor yesterday. Hope things look better soon. Just wanted you to see what we did yesterday in the afternoon and early evening.
Phil dug all our potatoes up on Sat. afternoon, because I didn't want them to freeze in the ground. I went to pick the corn, not feeling real well. It was kind of cold outside, so I bundled up real toasty. We had 12 rows of sweet corn that Mr. Phil had planted. We had eaten some and it was so wonderful. I didn't think we would have a whole lot left. Wrong........ When I finished I had between 450-500 ears of beautiful golden corn. I about croaked. With not feeling well and caring for our sick daughter, I was totally overwhelmed. I just about cried, because I didn't know how in the world we would get it all put up. I humbled myself, (I always hate to ask for help, because everyone is so busy) and called some dear friends that live in a Beachy (Amish Mennonite) community. They have been my forever friends and part family. I have adopted them and they have me. What a deal! They said,"sure come down". After going to the doctor Phil and I took off for their home. I thought it might interest you to see how we put up the corn. It was a day that I will tuck in my heart. I always love to go to their house. It is so warm and welcome. There is Grandma Yoder, Rosa and Marian (I call them unclaimed blessings, they are unmarried sisters who care for their precious momma) and two of Rosa's grand daughters. Rosa adopted two little girls when they were little. They are both are married with little children. Two of the children were at Rosa's. Grandma Yoder is 93. She is so dear to me. We sit at her table and she always has a smile and some nugget of the word to share with us. She finds delight in asking Mr. Phil to ask the blessings. It warms our hearts. We never know how long Grandma will be with us. Until that day we will be thankful she is a part of our life.

Blessings,
Linda

Blog Party At "She Looketh Well"

Michelle from shelookethwell is having "A Mini Party and Giveaway. She said "that she is needing a little fun in her life right now". So lets do that for her!!!!!! It doesn't look hard to do. We only have today and tomorrow, sorry, I just found out about it today from Camille, Flowers in His Garden. Go to the blogs and enjoy!

I guess I need to explain a little. Michelle over at She Looketh Well is having every one tell alittle about who we are and why we blog on our blog........

So here goes, who am I? I am a momma of 5 precious children on earth and two in heaven, 3 wonderful daughter in loves, grammie of 9 adorable grandchildren, married to the love of my life, for 35 years!! I am a princess of the King of Kings and will enjoy living with Him for eternity in heaven. I can't wait to see how He has fixed up His place for those who want to be a part of His kingdom. I stand at awe of His love for us. I want to live out my life for Him.

The reason I blog, is because I want to be able to love and encourage women from my home. I live on a farm and don't get out much, because of all the responsibilities here, so this gives me a creative outlet to journal my daily life, loving my family and friends. As I do that my prayer is that the things I do might bless other grammies and mommies to maybe take a little idea and put it into their home. I love to make things pretty in our little farm house, that we just inherited from my honey's parents. It is going to be a lot of fun to start ripping up old carpets, paint walls and make it look like our home. You will be able to go on that adventure with us if you like.

I still have 2 daughters at home that I am investing my life into to prepare them to be keepers at home when the Lord brings them their husbands (if that is His will). They are learning to can, grow a garden, keep a house, cook and probably more than I know. My husband and I want them to have their own faith, that will carry them through the path that the Lord has for them. Teaching them who Jesus is and His Word is a major priority for us.

We also do Farmer's Market now that the farm has been divided, and my blogging will be our journey on what the Lord has for us during this season of our life! We have blogged about Farmer's Market.

Design for a fabric company that is located in New York has been a real blessing. It just happened and I never thought I would ever do that sort of thing. I have been doing that for 15 years now and can stay at my home and still enjoy farm life with my family. We also have a store on the web called PeaceCreek Collections Store. We carry some of our patterns and hand crafted products, that I have designed for sale. We will be adding new designs to it all the time. Hopefully new items will be up today or tomorrow. We always wanted to have a blog and a store and now we do. We have been blogging since April and I wish I would of done this along time ago. I love the ladies that have come into my life. It is a wonderful way to express who you are. As I train my precious daughters I will blog what we do like recipes, decorating and just things that happen in a day at Prairie Flower Farm. Blogging has truly been a gift to me.

I have had hard times and blessings, both have been used by the Lord to make me in His image. May I represent Him with my life, as I blog and share with all who come to my blog.
If you want to get my posts sign up on both my blogs and you won't miss out on what is going on here!!!!!!! Thank you so much for taking time and coming by.

Blessings,
Linda

Another "Grammie and Poppa Camp"

Poppa built a beautiful fire, so we could roast hotdogs and marshmallows. Sitting around the fire praying and talking helps us get to hear what is going on in our grandchildren's life and how we can better pray for them. It is one of my favorite times.

Poppa carved their names into their walking sticks, that he got for them out in Colorado. They kept them by their sides most of the weekend.

Everyone smelled so bad from the fire, I felt like they needed to take a shower so I wanted them to be clean in the morning for church. We were all going to sleep in our "Mail Barn" in the lofts. Boys on one side with Poppa and myself and the girls on the other side. When it is time to go to bed, I have always told them a made up story about Mr. and Mrs. Toad Frog. The story is always about them and Mr. and Mrs. who live in a big tree by our house with their 7 children. We go on trips all over. I try to have practical life character building stories and they can't wait to hear another one. Instead we read Goose Eggs by E.J. Taylor this evening. I have read this book to all my children. It is pretend, but so sweet. Another book is Ivy Cottage. There is another one, but I didn't care for it. The story is about two rag dolls. Miss Biscuits, Ruby
Buttons and Violet Pickles. We ended the evening with prayer. My grandchildren are so precious to me and my hearts desire is that they will grow up and fear and love their Heavenly Father. That they will come to him for salvation that was paid at Calvary.
Oh, may the Lord give me the desire of my heart. Lights out, until another day!
We got up in the morning and 3 of the children forgot church clothes. Sometimes we do just stay home with them all and have church at home, so there was a mix up. We ended up staying home and had a wonderful time. Poppa taught us about "seeking first the kingdom of God". The fact that you had to get in the Bible everyday to learn those things the Lord wants you know. It was a very special time for all of us. I am so thankful for a Poppa that loves the Lord!!
This chair and bench are at the entrance of the "Mail Barn' (my work area with all my fabrics, crafts and supplies). The kids made it more inviting.

Later on that afternoon we got ready for their parents, who were coming for Sunday dinner.
They all helped getting the farm ready. They added more pumpkins and gourds to the chair and bench. They had so much fun doing so. They also had jars with little votive candles at the entrance.

This isn't the best picture, but I love seeing them work along side their Poppa. They love the farm and now appreciate all the hard work they did when they helped plant the garden. We can teach them that there are rewards from their Heavenly Father and hard work! He gives us one seed and He produces so much more for us. Amazing, He is so good and we want our grandchildren to know that.
Home grown potatoes were dug by Poppa and grandkids. They even washed them up for me, so I could cook them. We leave the peels on when we make mashed potatoes. They were wonderful with chicken gravy on top!!! We do not eat fried chicken very often in fact hardly ever, but I tell you it was sooooo wonderful. I fried up 3 whole chickens plus 20 chicken legs. The grand kids had worked up an appetite by the time we ate.
The children and my daughter in love went to the garden and picked corn. It is sweet corn and you can almost eat it uncooked. It was delicious.

Here is a picture of the table. I love how I can design fabric for the holidays. I am a blessed women. I honestly can't believe that I get to do some of the things I do. I am truly so grateful.
I gave the little girls decorations to make the table look pretty. They had little mason jars with tea lights all down the table with little white pumpkins in between. It looked so sweet. Training them to make sure that their tables can be decorated inexpensively. They also hung lights all around the inside, so we could eat with just candles and lights. It was so pretty.
My sweet friend Alicia gave me this salt and pepper shaker for the my fall holidays.
Are they not the cutest?
I found these dishes at a store by us. They were priced so nice and my sweetie husband
bought me dishes for our family dinners. They are sooooo beautiful and you guessed it, RED!
The grandkids sang for their parents, as they all sat in the loft of our "mail barn"

Ending the evening with the children singing some of their favorite praise songs to their parents topped the evening off. It was a weekend that I trust the grandchildren will tuck in their hearts and someday they will invest in their children and grandchildren
the way it has been for them.

I went out this morning to clean up and it was so quiet. I love it when there is lots of laughter and so I will wait for next time. We will be having a snowman party for the next party. We have one of those every year and I will have to get busy coming up with some ideas. If you have any ideas let me know!
Blessings,
Linda

A Day On The Farm

Naughty boys!! As our neighbor said "they are not steers they are pets". Well now they are so big we can't walk them around anymore. They are getting out. This is the third time. Our sons are coming to fix the fence........again.

They load the seed wheat on pallet
The seed wheat is ready to take home. Can't wait to get it in the ground. It is so cool when the wheat is green in long lines going up a field. I will take a pic when it happens.
Momma duck has layed a nest of eggs. I will be watching closely as to what
she is going to do. Oh how I wish she would hatch some babies for me. I will
keep you all posted.

Still working on designs. It is taking me forever with canning and all.

I love this blog. I had my husband put a post in my garden, because I had saved this picture from an old Country Living magazine. Isn't it so cute? You have to go to this blog and see it. Here's A Hand To Hold On To I am sure you will enjoy Lori.
Blessings,
Linda
