Two Of My Girlie Hens Are Broody!!!!!!!

Hi sweet ladies, hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday. It was fun in the bakery as we made some special treats for the kids. They seemed to like

Our evening was so fun. Our daughter's gave us a decorated card saying we had dinner, their treat...... at any restaurant we wanted to go to. Our girls are so precious to us!!!!!!

Tonight when I got home I went straight out to do chores. Two of my girlies, Miss Milly and (?, she needs a name) started setting  yesterday..........on their eggs. I noticed that both of them were really tucked down and puffed out full in each of their nests. When I went out tonight they were the same as yesterday. I got so excited, because that means they are probably broody. I noticed the wire basket tucked in the corner....... had 4 eggs in it, from the other cochin girlies.  I gathered the eggs and put them in the front of my sweatshirt. Then I ran inside the house and got some more eggs that I had gathered last night.  I gave each of them 4 more eggs. They tucked the extra eggs under their tummies. Thought it would be fun if I videoed them so you could watch them tuck the little eggs under their feathers.

Thought you would like to know the hen's body temperature is 105 to 106 degree every time! When the hen sits on the eggs the eggs heat to 100 to 101 degrees. She will turn the eggs on a regular basis. God is so amazing to create the nesting instinct in a hen to know what to do!

I will be fixing a little cage of some sorts to go around them so the other girlies won't bother them. Cochins are such good setters, if you are wanting to have them do the incubating for you! I have the date they will hatch on my calendar. March 5th is the due date!

I am taking names for the Girlie Hen on the right if you would like to give a name..........a little surprise for the name that wins!

Blessings from our farm,

Linda

Here is a note from Grammy Sue, Delainey,
"Well not a whole lot of help, but the Mayo staff and doctors were really nice. We are going to try a medicine to bring down her pulmonary hypertension..doc says it only has a10~20% chance to work. So until we get that down no heart surgery. Still praying for a miracle".

Thank you ladies for all the prayers!!!!!!!

  4. How about Matilda? Love seeing about your girlies. I live on the outskirts of a town, literally around the corner from farms but my sub-division does not allow farm animals. :(

  5. Hi, I thought Matilda and then saw the note from 'cropnmoomsie'suggesting that name, so how about "Billie" as another suggestion? It is fun to watch them :)

  7. Linda~ I, too, have two broody hens, but I have too many chickens now so I am not letting them set. It will be hard not to have babies this spring! :~{
I was just storing away some books that I had out for the granddaughters, and one is an old discarded school library book called 'Speckles Goes to School'. It is about a boy bringing his hen to school for the other children to watch her hatch out a setting of eggs. Thought since you are showing others about your hens, Speckles might be a cute name.
    Have fun with those girlies!

  11. Hi Linda,
How are you? Your chickens are soooo cute. There are so many good name options already, I like the Matilda one. But for my own suggestion - how about Miss Elise....no particular reason, just thought of it when I was watching your video.
    Have a great day,
    Selina.

  19. I like all the names suggested... my question is about the eggs. Why did you get more eggs and put under them? Can they hatch an egg they didn't lay and one that was produced at a different time by a different chicken? Also thought it might be just because they were young so they could have more eggs to sit on. As you can tell, I know nothing about chickens! I did grow up in the country though.

  20. I first thought of Miss Molly and Henny Penny, but noticed both were already posted. So, guess my other name would be Miss Willie Mae or Miss Frilly.
Praying for all the little sick babies. I had a very sick baby 41 years ago. With the grace of God, she is a beautiful, healthy, and precious Mommy today.
