She didn't make it!

Hello Sweet ladies,

Miss Milly

Well when I got home tonight I realized that when I went into the big coop that the full size Mottled Hen that I thought was hurt was not. It was Miss Milly and when I went to check on her, she was dead. She died when I was at the bakery. I am very thankful that I do still have the Mottled rooster and another Bantam Mottled hen. I will separate them this spring from the flock and they can hopefully have some babies. The hen is not as beautiful as Miss Milly was, she was a prize! That is part of having free range chickens during the day and living on a farm. The owners I hope will be keeping the dogs at their place. They are different dogs then the ones that came and really killed a lot of my ducks and chickens. Hard day!

Fresh Cherry Pie Filling

I pinned this recipe on my Pinterest the other day........just so I would be ready when our sour cherries came in at the bakery.........they did!

We are trying to cut costs at the bakery.....so we are making more things by scratch,  just to help us get through all the price increases. It has been wonderful for us to learn different ways we can do that. Great for the girls!  I found this cherry pie filling recipe and made it today. Easy and very very good. The cherries were really nice to work with and the pie filling turned out wonderful. Our boss said we were saving money! Good thing!

I made what I call Cherry pie for the kids........even though I don't have to make a  ton of pie crusts. It is very economical and fast.  I use an oblong  pan..........spoon the pie filling into the bottom of the pan about 2" deep. Set aside.

Then I make a wonderful pie crust that we found last year while working at the bakery! It is the best. It is a Simply Recipes recipe called Perfect Pie Crust. Super easy and really easy if you have a food processor.  Found here.  Lattice the top and sprinkle a little sugar on the top then bake for about 20 minutes. For my sweet man I surprised him......gave him a piece with a sliver of ice cream on the top........he was pleased........with me!

Cherry Orange Graham Muffins

Tressa also used some of the cherries to make these wonderful muffins for tomorrow morning for breakfast. We made a streusel for the top of butter, brown sugar and whole oats. Sprinkle that over the top of each muffin.  There are so many good blogs out there with super recipes. They have been helping us with new recipes in the kitchen .  Plus we feel like we are getting paid and an education all at the same time.

Hope all is well with you..........trusting that you had a good day today!

God Bless You!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hugs from our farm to your HOME!

  1. I am so sorry to hear about the death of your sweet little hen, Miss Millie, she was lovely. Recipes using cherries are always a favorite. Greetings from Maine, Julie.

  2. Sad to hear about poor Miss Millie, your hen.
    The cherry desserts look yummy.

  3. Hi Linda...Feel bad for Miss Millie....sorry!

I am a big fan of cherries. Guess you could say I love them..that big ol' tub made me hungry and cherry pie is one of my all time favs, so I am loving this post...

  4. So sorry about the loss of one of you favorite hens. It is hard, I know. I do not like cherries myself but we have a couple of trees and when they do well I have made home made cherry pie filling that you put in the freezer. Hubs likes it a lot.

  5. Oh Linda, I m so sorry about Miss Mille.

  6. I too am sorry about Miss Mille,I free range during the day also and before have had stray dogs comeonto the farm, bad thing is once the dogs have found them you either have to have them picked up or take care of them. sad but we have to protect our flocks.

  7. So sorry to hear about Miss Millie - she was indeed a beauty. It's a shame more people cannot be responsible pet owners...
Love cherries so thanks for the tips! Yummmm
Enjoy your day and God bless you too!

  8. Oh, poor Miss Millie! I'm so sorry, Linda!

Thank you for sharing those recipes that I must try. My family would be in heaven!

  9. So sorry to hear about Miss Millie meeting an untimely end. She was so beautiful.

Thanks for the pie filling recipe -- and those muffins look amazing. God is so good to give us moments of contentment and even joy right in the midst of hard days.

  10. Oh Linda, I am so sorry you lost you Miss Milly, what a beautiful girl she was.

  11. Dear Linda,
I'm sorry to hear about Miss Millie :( :( :( She really was a beautiful hen :)

wow, that's so cool that you are making more things from scratch at the college kitchen. I think "made from scratch" always tastes better...and everyone will really like the food even more ;) :) That's great...and it's nice that it's making your boss very happy :) :)

Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :) :)

p.s. My precious Dad left the hospital this morning, and is now at the VA facility. He's going to get top-notch physical, occupation and speech therapy :) :) Thanks for all your prayers. I'm praying he can come home soon.

  12. i'm so sorry for your loss of Miss Milly. she was a beautiful hen. it's so hard when one loses a 'pet'. my stepdaughter/gkids just lost their 2nd dacshound(sp?),Camille, last week. her litter mate, Albert, died 1 yr ago. i will think of Miss Milly when my thoughts go to Albert/Camille!

  13. Sorry to hear about Miss Milly. We usually leave our chickens in their houses until late afternoon or evening depending on the weather, etc. The last few years our chickens have mostly died from natural causes. Our dogs have been good about keeping predators away.

And you also share some of that education with us. What a blessing! I tried one of the chocolate cake recipes you posted a while back, which you had made for your son's anniversary. It was great! Some cake recipes made from scratch I haven't liked. If you have a good yellow cake from scratch that you like, I'd love to have the recipe.

    Love, Michelle

  14. Linda your life is one amazing journey! Your love of the Lord touches my heart each time I visit. I love knowing you here. One day we will meet face to face!

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving me a comment. It is so appreciated and it makes me feel like I am making a new friend.

God Bless your day!
